Great Baddow High School was proud to host its highly successful Careers Fair 2026 this week, providing an inspiring and enriching evening for students in Years 9 to 13. Held across Primmer Hall and the Diner on Wednesday 4th March, the event brought together an impressive range of employers, universities, colleges and training providers, all eager to support our students as they explore their future pathways. Throughout the event, students were able to visit five dedicated careers zones: STEM Creative Health & Care Business/Finance/Law Higher Education Each zone offered interactive displays, engaging conversations and valuable insight into the diverse opportunities available beyond school. Exhibitors included major employers such as BAE Systems, Titan Airways, Specsavers, Essex Police and the British Army, along with creative organisations, professional services, and a wide selection of universities including the University of Essex, ARU, UEA, and Canterbury Christ Church University. Students benefited from face‑to‑face discussions about apprenticeships, university pathways, industry expectations, and the wide variety of routes available after GCSEs and Sixth Form. Many exhibitors commented on how impressed they were with the thoughtful questions, confidence and enthusiasm shown by our students. "Thank you so much for inviting us. We felt incredibly welcome and your students and staff who supported on the day were lovely. The fair was well organised and there was a great buzz during the event." This week we’ve been celebrating World Book Day as part of The National Year of Reading, which launched in our library on Monday. World Book Day takes place every year on the first Thursday in March and is all about discovering new authors, exploring amazing stories, and enjoying reading just for fun. Throughout the week, students have been able to join in a range of activities and earn credits, house points, and prizes. The library has been full of excitement as students took on the Hidden Book Title quiz and the Murder in the Library mystery challenge, using clues to work out the victim, the culprit, the location, and the weapon. Around school, students enjoyed searching for posters in the Guess Whose Pet Got Caught Reading challenge, trying to match each teacher to their reading pet. Students spotted reading confidently and for pleasure have been awarded Golden Tickets, and our top readers were invited to the Chapters and Cupcakes event, where they got an exclusive first look at new book releases—and a cupcake if they borrowed one! It’s been a fantastic week celebrating reading, curiosity, and creativity across the school. Don’t forget to spend your book voucher!

As part of National Careers Week and the Year 9 Options process, we are pleased to be hosting our annual Careers Fair on Wednesday 4th March. The event is open to all students and parents from Years 9–13, and provides a valuable opportunity to explore future pathways, speak to employers, and discover a wide range of careers and post‑16/post‑18 options. To help manage visitor flow and ensure everyone can make the most of the Fair, we kindly request families attend at the following times: Years 10, 11, 12 and 13: 6:00pm – 7:30pm Year 9: 7:00pm – 8:30pm This year’s Careers Fair features a wide range of exhibitors from universities, colleges, apprenticeship providers, professional organisations and employers. Exhibitors will be based across five themed zones: Further / Higher Education STEM Finance & Business Health & Care The Arts For Year 9 students, the event serves as the first of their key opportunities to gather information as part of the options process. Years 10–13 will also benefit from expert advice on future study, training routes and career opportunities. Independent guidance will be available from Directions’ Career Advisers throughout the evening. With all Year 11 students now required to remain in education or training until age 18, and with an increasing number of post‑18 pathways available, understanding the full range of options has never been more important. The Careers Fair offers a supportive, informative environment to help students make confident and informed choices. We strongly encourage students to attend with a parent or carer, and school uniform or smart attire is recommended to help students make a positive first impression. Our Year 9 students have just returned from an unforgettable three day cultural adventure in Barcelona. From jaw dropping architecture to mountain top views, football heritage and sunset beach games, the trip offered an exciting blend of learning and fun.  Day 1 – Gaudí’s Masterpiece and City Views The trip began bright and early as students boarded the morning flight to Spain. On arrival in Barcelona, our first stop was the world renowned La Sagrada Familia. With a guided tour of Gaudí’s extraordinary, and still unfinished, basilica, students were able to appreciate its intricate design and unique architecture, which has been evolving for more than a century. The group then continued to Montjuïc, where the city opened up beneath them from the mirador viewpoint, offering spectacular panoramic scenes of Barcelona. Day 2 – Gothic Quarter, Markets and Football Fever Day two began in the heart of historic Barcelona with a guided tour of the Gothic Quarter and its impressive cathedral. Afterwards, students explored the vibrant Boquería market, where they confidently used their Spanish skills to order lunch from local vendors. The afternoon split the group between two exciting activities: a tour of Camp Nou, legendary home of FC Barcelon, and a shopping trip around the city’s bustling retail areas. Back at the hotel that evening, everyone enjoyed a traditional tapas dinner featuring tortilla española, croquetas, jamón serrano and patatas bravas. The day concluded with a lively music quiz hosted by Mr Wells, with Pearl emerging as the proud winner. Day 3 – Montserrat, Immersive Museums and Beach Sunset The final full day began with a breathtaking cable car ride to the Montserrat Monastery. Perched high in the mountains, the site offered sweeping views and the chance to admire its beautiful architecture up close. After making their way back down to the city, students visited the innovative White Rabbit Museu, an immersive and interactive celebration of Barcelona’s history and culture. With some free time afterwards, the group enjoyed a final bit of shopping before returning to the hotel. As the sun set, students headed to the beach for a friendly game of football, followed by a barbecue dinner. With bags packed and memories made, it was time to prepare for the journey home. Day 4 - Churros and Chocolate A lovely last morning, with churros and chocolate, before heading out for a sunny stroll along the beachfront. Great Baddow High School was delighted to welcome back former student Natasha Winter, now a Consultant and Project Manager at CGI, who returned this week to deliver an inspiring careers talk to our Year 12 and 13 ICT and Computer Science students. Natasha shared her journey from studying GCSEs and A Levels at Great Baddow High School to securing a Degree Apprenticeship in Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineering) with the University of Winchester. She offered students a first-hand insight into what a degree apprenticeship involves, including the balance of university study alongside four days a week working in industry. During her presentation, Natasha explained the wide range of technical and professional skills she developed throughout her apprenticeship, such as: Software development Cloud computing Cyber security Project management Data analytics Natasha also discussed her varied roles at CGI, from testing and product ownership to her current position as a Project Manager leading large-scale technology and data-driven projects. Her journey highlighted the opportunities for rapid progression, skill-building, and professional networking available through apprenticeship pathways. As well as sharing her experiences, Natasha offered valuable guidance for students considering their next steps after Sixth Form. She gave practical advice on how to find degree apprenticeship opportunities, ways to strengthen applications, and the importance of curiosity, resilience, and taking ownership of one’s career development. The session was hugely motivating and provided our students with a real-world perspective on the exciting and diverse career paths available within the technology sector. We extend our sincere thanks to Natasha for returning to Great Baddow High School and for investing her time in inspiring the next generation of digital talent.

Great Baddow High School’s PE Department brought festive fun to the school fields as students took part in the annual Farleigh Hospice Reindeer Run. Following the post‑event period required to collect, count, and verify all sponsorship funds, the school is delighted to announce that thanks to the generosity and commitment of the students, a remarkable grand total of £9,558.34 was donated to Farleigh Hospice. This is the highest amount ever raised by Great Baddow High School for a charity event and the largest contribution from any school to Farleigh Hospice this year. Students across the school took on the challenge to run, walk or jog as many laps as possible, competing in a friendly inter-house competition to see which School House could “travel” the greatest distance in a race to get closest to the North Pole from London. Sixth Form students supported the event and cheered participants along the route, with students donning antlers and Christmas jumpers while following a route led by a very jolly Santa. Students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, determination and a strong sense of community spirit. The event supported Farleigh Hospice, a local charity providing vital care and support for families across Mid-Essex. Members of Farleigh's Fundraising Team, Danielle Parsons and Sarah Thorogood, came to support one of the Year 8 Reindeer Runs and were delighted to experience the energy and festive spirit across the school field. Farleigh Hospice have been running the Reindeer Run for the last four years, with this year the biggest event yet. The money raised by the school will go towards funding local hospice care, which includes the specialist care and support delivered by doctors, nurses and therapists in patients own homes and in the hospice Inpatient Unit in Chelmsford. The Great Baddow High School PE Department expressed pride in the students’ achievements. Miss Livingston, PE Teacher said: “We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout and the incredible effort from all our students. The atmosphere was amazing and seeing everyone come together for such a worthy cause was truly heartwarming. Whether students chose to walk, jog or run the route it was clear to see the enthusiasm all around as everyone got into the spirit of the event with their festive antlers and jumpers, all in aid of a truly special cause. In addition to a £2 contribution to take part, funds were boosted by Go Fund me pages, taking sponsorship forms to parents’ workplaces and one student even took their sponsorship form to their grandparent’s bingo! Hopefully next year will be even bigger and better, as we are planning on including all year groups across the school, and the staff are equally keen to take part.” Mr P Farmer, Headteacher, added: “This event perfectly captures what makes our school community so special -enthusiasm, teamwork, and a shared desire to support others. Raising a record-breaking amount for Farleigh Hospice is a remarkable achievement, and I am incredibly proud of every student and staff member involved.” Farleigh Hospice was truly grateful for the amazing enthusiasm and support from Great Baddow High School during December's Reindeer Run. Let’s Make Amelia’s Birthday Wish Come True!  Great Baddow High School is joining the mission to help 7‑year‑old Amelia, who is receiving palliative care, break the UK record for the most birthday cards received ahead of her 8th birthday on 3rd March. Her goal is 8,000 cards — and we want to help her get there. Over the next two weeks, students and staff are invited to write a simple birthday card with a kind message. Sign with your first name, hand it to your tutor, and help us spread some joy. Charmaine, from Amelia’s family, said the flurry of cards would “give her hope” — and together, we can make a huge difference. The KS3 History Project Evening brought together an exceptional showcase of student-led historical work, celebrating curiosity, creativity and craftsmanship across the Key Stage 3 curriculum. Working from an open brief, pupils were invited to explore any aspect of history that inspired them — and the outcomes were nothing short of outstanding. Throughout the term, students researched a huge range of topics before presenting their findings through imaginative formats including detailed models, information boards, games, digital presentations, food creations and interactive displays. Their dedication, passion and independent thinking were clearly evident in every project. At the end of the school day, participants gathered in the Sixth Form Common Room to set up their displays, explore each other’s work, and offer supportive peer feedback before presenting their projects to staff. The turnout was fantastic, and the atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm and pride. A Remarkable Range of Historical Exploration Students produced a phenomenal breadth of work, including projects on: The Mary Rose The tomb of Tutankhamun Leonardo da Vinci’s flying machine Walt Disney Victorian houses Shakespeare and The Globe Theatre Anglo-Saxon village life A bakery project inspired by Mrs Beeton’s original recipes The event also included an impressive array of interactive games based on: The Khmer Empire Cipher coding Egyptian pyramids Titanic-themed Top Trumps and card games Many students chose deeply personal themes, creating moving tributes to heroic great-grandparents who served during wartime, complete with replica model planes and battlefield research. Sports historians also shone with projects exploring the history of Netball, Cricket, Old Trafford and F1 Racing. A Celebration of Learning Students presented their work with confidence, professionalism and genuine passion for their chosen topic. Their ability to explain, teach and share their historical research was a testament to the hard work they invested throughout the term. The evening was a wonderful celebration of historical learning across KS3 — and a powerful display of the talent, imagination and enthusiasm of our GB Historians. Well done to all students involved! 16 Students had the wonderful opportunity to visit Shure Ltd at their Head Office in London. After meeting at Chelmsford train station, students were tasked with purchasing their own tickets and working out which platform we needed to depart from. A short Journey later we arrived at London Liverpool street and then made our way on foot to Monument and the Shure Ltd Head Office.  Matt Boddy, Engineer Senior Development & Training, and his colleagues gave us a very warm welcome and ensured we were settled in nicely. The morning session focused on a history of the company the mechanics of sound. Students explored and investigated concepts such as amplitude, frequency, wavelength and how a microphone actually works. Peter James, VP Global Business Development, delivered an inspiring careers presentation that really captured the interest and imagination of our students. Not only was the presentation engaging but it also offered some sage words of wisdom that I hope our students will remember for the rest of their lives. After a pause for lunch, students were led through a session on radio waves and microwaves, including how these are used in audio visual equipment. To finish up the day students were taken on a tour of the premises and had the opportunity to speak to other colleagues as they were working, seeing the workplace in real life was an extremely rare opportunity so we are extremely privileged to have been extended this chance. A special thank you to Peter James for the inspiring careers presentation and to Matt Boddy for another exciting and engaging day at Shure Ltd. The experience will add great value when our students connect the what they learn in the classroom to the real world contexts. This term, Sixth Form has introduced an enhanced careers initiative designed to broaden students’ understanding of the opportunities available to them beyond school. The programme aims to inspire, inform and raise the profile of a wide range of subject sectors, ensuring students gain meaningful insight into potential career pathways. Each half term, the focus shifts to a different sector. In November, students explored careers in Science, Health, and Sport & Leisure, engaging with speakers who shared first‑hand experiences from their professions. This included contributions from industry specialists as well as former students who have gone on to pursue careers in these fields. This half term, the spotlight has moved to Business & Economics, Finance, Maths, and Computer Science & IT. Through talks, workshops and alumni engagement, students are gaining valuable exposure to the skills, qualifications and opportunities associated with these sectors. Interfaith Speakers Inspire Students Across Year 10, Year 11 and Sixth Form Students across Year 10, Year 11 and the Sixth Form took part in a thought‑provoking interfaith event this week, gaining valuable insights into the beliefs, practices and lived experiences of three major world faiths. The session brought together three distinguished speakers, each offering a unique perspective shaped by their own community roles and personal journeys. Our guests included: Dr Sidra Naeem – Muslim, member of the Havering Interfaith Forum and the Standing Committee for Religious Education Rev’d Heather Marsden – Christian, Chaplain at HMP Chelmsford Smita Rajesh – Hindu, Chair and Trustee of the Chelmsford Hindu Society Each year group participated in a structured session designed to promote curiosity, respectful dialogue and deeper understanding of world faiths. Teachers opened the event by outlining its purpose: to encourage positive conversations about belief, identity and community. During the main section of the event, speakers responded to pre‑submitted student questions exploring topics such as religious festivals, prayer practices, moral decision‑making and the role of faith in modern society. Students were also able to ask spontaneous questions—either directly or anonymously—leading to rich and engaging discussion. To conclude, each speaker delivered a two‑minute summary of the core beliefs and values within their tradition, highlighting both the distinctiveness of their faith and the shared themes of compassion, peace and service to others. Teachers closed the sessions by thanking the speakers for their openness and generosity. The event was extremely well received by students, many of whom commented on how valuable it was to hear directly from practising members of different faith communities. Learners reported that the experience helped them challenge misconceptions, broaden their understanding and appreciate the diversity present both locally and globally. We are incredibly proud to share that former Great Baddow High School student Harry Allen is currently undertaking one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges — rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the ocean‑rowing trio the Three Flying Fish. Harry and his teammates set off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on 14 December, beginning their unsupported row to Antigua. Unsupported means they must carry everything they need and rely solely on teamwork, resilience, and determination to complete the journey. The team is on track to become the youngest crew ever to row any ocean, an achievement rarer than summiting Mount Everest. They row in two‑hour shifts around the clock, facing unpredictable weather, intense physical strain, and the vast isolation of the open ocean. As they enter the final stretch of their journey, they are expected to reach land at the end of January. Beyond the physical challenge, the purpose behind their row is deeply meaningful. The Three Flying Fish aim to inspire young people to: Embrace new experiences Push beyond their comfort zones Believe that age should never limit ambition Raising Money for Teenage Cancer Trust Their row is also raising vital funds for Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity supporting young people facing cancer. Thanks to generous donations, the team has already raised over £17,000, helping make a real difference to teenagers and young adults across the UK. A GBHS Student Making History Harry’s journey from the corridors of GBHS to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is an inspiring reminder of what courage, perseverance, and teamwork can achieve. We hope his story encourages our students to dream big and believe in their potential. We look forward to celebrating their safe arrival in Antigua — and the world record they are set to secure.

Reindeer Run raises over £6,000 for Farleigh Hospice Last week, our PE Department brought a burst of holiday cheer to the school field with the Interhouse Charity Reindeer Fun Run! Students laced up their trainers and took on the challenge to run, walk, or jog as many laps as possible, competing to see which house could cover the greatest distance – all in a race to get closest to the North Pole from London! The atmosphere was full of energy and festive spirit, with antlers proudly worn and Christmas jumpers adding plenty of colour to the day. Led by a very jolly Santa, students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. The fun run supported Farleigh Hospice, a local charity providing vital care and support for families across Mid-Essex. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our students, we’ve raised over £6,000 and now we are just waiting for the final count!  A huge thank you to everyone who took part and supported this special cause. Your efforts have made a real difference, and we hope you enjoyed the event as much as we did!

School trips are an essential part of learning beyond the classroom. They give students the chance to experience history, culture, and language first-hand, turning lessons into real-life adventures. These opportunities help build confidence, broaden horizons, and create memories that last a lifetime. Our Year 8 trip to Munich was a perfect example of this – combining education, culture, and fun in one unforgettable experience. On Monday, 40 excited Year 8 students set off from Baddow for an unforgettable trip to Munich. After landing, we took a coach to our youth hostel, settled in, and enjoyed a traditional German-style dinner. Wrapped up warm against the chilly temperatures, we headed out to explore the magical Tollwood Winter Festival at Theresienwiese – the very site of the famous Oktoberfest. The festival was a dazzling display of lights, culture, and creativity, offering a true taste of modern Germany. Tuesday brought sunshine and smiles as Mrs Fox led her very own “Foxy Tours” – a fascinating sightseeing adventure! Highlights included visiting the iconic Lady of Munich and discovering the legendary Devil’s footprint, a quirky twist of divine intervention. Later, we immersed ourselves in the festive atmosphere of Munich’s traditional Christmas market. Students enjoyed shopping for gifts and sampling delicious German treats – with Bratwurst and chocolate-covered fruit emerging as clear favourites! In the evening, we returned to Tollwood for more music, street performances, and celebrations. On Wednesday, we explored the world of engineering at BMW, where students tested their balance on classic and modern motorcycles. A real showstopper was the famous Elvis car, valued at an incredible €8 million! We also caught a glimpse of the Olympic Park before heading back to the city centre. There, we climbed 306 steps to the top of Alter Peter Church, rewarded with breathtaking views over Munich and Marienplatz. With the sound of a choir singing from the Town Hall balcony, we enjoyed our final dinner at the Christmas market before returning to the hostel for our last night. Our final day, Friday, began with a visit to the iconic Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich – a must-see for any football fan! After soaking up the atmosphere, it was time to say goodbye to our home away from home and begin the journey back. A huge thank you to our amazing staff – Mr Fox, Mr Davis, and Mr Blum – and, of course, to our wonderful Year 8 students. You were fantastic ambassadors for the school, and we couldn’t be prouder! The event showcased the incredible talent of our Creative Arts students, leaving the audience inspired and full of festive cheer. We were delighted to welcome Victoria Dilly, Chief Executive Officer of the School Library Association, to our school. Her visit was an exciting opportunity to showcase the vibrant role our library plays in supporting learning and literacy across the curriculum. The day began at 11:00am with a warm welcome, followed by a chance for Victoria to meet our enthusiastic pupil librarians during the morning break. Their dedication and passion for reading set the tone for an inspiring day. As pupil librarians, it was an utmost pleasure to meet Victoria Dilly. In our brief meeting we discussed what our role involves, the library clubs we are involved in and enjoyed speaking about how our school library has a special place within the heart of our school. In return, we received useful tips on how to promote literacy within our school, such as organising 'readathons' for supporting charities, involving tutors, and speaking out at assemblies to “take the school library outside the building into other parts of the school.”  2026 has been declared by the Department of Education as the National Year of Reading, we will be working with these tips as a school library, and make the most of this year for all students. Ada M (13A2), School Poet Laureate Victoria then spent time with our Head of English, discussing how the library complements the English curriculum and fosters a love of literature. Later, she observed a Year 8 research lesson, gaining insight into how students use library resources to develop independent learning skills. Afterwards, Victoria explored strategic priorities for library development. Lunch provided a wonderful opportunity to see the library in action, buzzing with students engaged in reading and research. The afternoon included further discussions with the library staff, as well as informal conversations over lunch. Victoria also observed a Year 7 English class enjoying a reading session in the library, highlighting the space as a hub for creativity and collaboration. I  really like coming to the library as it gives me the opportunity to come and use the laptops, read and get on with some homework. I also love coming with my class as we can work as a team to do the activities we are given. Twenty-four Year 13 A Level Geography students embarked on an unforgettable four-day adventure to Iceland, starting with an early 3 a.m. departure. Within hours of landing, they were immersed in the country’s dramatic landscapes, visiting the Bridge Between Continents, Stamper Craters, the mystical Gunnuhver Hot Springs (named after a legendary ghost), Reykjanes Lighthouse, and the fascinating Raufarholshellir Lava Tunnels before settling into their hotel. Day Two began with a relaxing swim at the famous Secret Lagoon, a naturally occurring hot spring steeped in history as the place where Icelanders first learned to swim. Students also spotted tiny houses said to belong to Iceland’s mythical “Hidden People.” The day continued with visits to the breathtaking Gulfoss Waterfall, the Geysir Geothermal Area, and a stop at Efsti-dalur II, a seventh-generation family-run dairy farm where students sampled delicious ice cream made from the farm’s own cows. The day concluded with a scenic walk through Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On Day Three, the group explored the majestic Skogafoss Waterfall, trekked across the stunning Sólheimajökull Glacier, and paused in the charming village of Vik for coffee and souvenirs. They then visited the dramatic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, famous for its basalt columns and powerful “sneaker waves,” before heading to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, where students braved a walk behind the cascading water—thankfully equipped with waterproofs! The final day featured a journey to Reykjavik, Iceland’s northernmost capital, with stops at an earthquake simulator and the bubbling Krysuvik Mud Pools. In Reykjavik, students climbed to the top of the iconic church for panoramic views and admired the striking architecture of the Harpa Concert Hall. Trip Highlights Students’ favourite moments included walking behind Seljalandsfoss, relaxing in the Secret Lagoon, swimming in a local geothermal pool on the last evening, and witnessing the awe-inspiring Northern Lights. A huge thank you to Mrs Dawson for organising and leading the trip, supported by Miss Oldfield, Miss Sudnik, our office staff, and the parents whose support made this incredible experience possible.

Our Year 10 and 11 Spanish students jetted off to Cadiz for an exciting language and cultural immersion trip. From the moment they arrived, their Spanish skills were put to the test by chaperone Pedro. After settling into the Spark hotel, the group enjoyed beach games and a sunset swim, followed by a BBQ and a relaxing evening. Day Two began with a full Spanish lesson, then a guided tour of Puerto de Santa María and Cádiz, including visits to a Moorish castle, Roman ruins, and the Torre Tavira with its live city views. The day ended with albóndigas, karaoke, and dancing! On Day Three, students indulged in churros con chocolate, cooked paella with Iris, and learned flamenco with Paula. Dinner at a local tapas bar gave them a taste of traditional Spanish cuisine, followed by a fun awards ceremony. This week marked the return of our much-loved annual Bake-Off, with a vibrant new theme celebrating the Day of the Dead festival.The colourful and creative cake and biscuit designs truly showcased our students’ imagination and enthusiasm. We were thrilled to see a record number of entries this year, with 33 students participating from Year 7 through to Sixth Form. Thanks to their efforts—and the generosity of our school community—we raised an impressive £215.30 for our chosen charity. We were keen to show visitors what life is like in Sixth Form, what facilities we have to offer, and the wide range of courses available - both A Level and Vocational courses. This week our Cambridge Technical Level 3 Business students attended Pontlands Park Hotel. The Bartella family threw open their doors to their luxury hotel for our students gain a valuable insight into rooms, facilities, event spaces and even included a look at "Drakes" the new Pop Up Al-Fresco dining experience in the grounds of the Victorian Estate in Great Baddow.  They took the students on a one-hour extensive tour into every part of the hotel, to give a real-life enriching experience to the students and also took time to sit with our students for over an hour, answering their specific questions to help them build on what they had learnt in their unit 4 coursework based on this luxury hotel and event space.  This is now the third year that Pontlands have allowed us to visit, for this truly unique and enriching experience. Last year over 80% of our students gained a Distinction in this unit, with this year’s results expected to be even higher. This is not only testament to the value of enrichment and the real-life learning brought into the classroom but also shows local businesses what they can do for young people in education in their own communities.   We were delighted to note that one of our former students is now part of their kitchen team and a current student is employed front of house. Thank you so much to Pontlands, and the Bartella family, for allowing us this opportunity and playing a vital part in our local community.  

The much loved Great Baddow Bake Off is taking place on Wednesday 5th November, so once again we are asking students and staff to don their aprons and 'get baking' ready to bring their entry in. This year’s theme is ‘Day of the Dead’, so entries should represent an aspect of the 'Day of the Dead Festival' and we are allowing both cakes and biscuits as entries. Entries to be baked at home and brought into the school library on Wednesday 5th November (before school). An ingredients sheet must be complete and handed in alongside any entry. These can be collected from the library. At break-time, students will be able to pay 50p for entry to the library, and taste the entries (while ‘stock’ remains). No change will be given out, so if they have a £1 coin, they can either have two slices or bring in a friend. There will be a credit for each entry and prizes, credits and certificates for the winning cake.  

If you are in Year 11 and considering applying for Great Baddow High School, the Sixth Form Open Evening is an essential part of the application process. This event is a fantastic opportunity to explore what our Sixth Form has to offer and to speak with staff and current students. This month saw the official opening of our new football facility at Great Baddow High School. Over the past 5 months we have seen the development of the new facility, which includes an exceptional 3G football pitch and first-class changing rooms. Students from Years 7-11 were invited to take part in specifically designed football sessions led by the coaches from the West Ham Football Club Foundation. Students were actively involved in a range of small-sided possession games, passing drills and shooting activities, challenging them as football players. It was fantastic to see the coaches working with our students, providing them with an additional opportunity to improve their skills and receive feedback. The coaches complimented the quality and commitment of all of the students involved. Staff spoke with students at the end of the session and Mr Farmer officially declared the facility as open. The Sports Department are delighted to be able to now fully utilise the pitch, with PE lesson taking place on there daily and also the extra-curricular clubs and fixtures. The facility will also be used by the local community, providing an additional space for local clubs and groups to hire, as well as the opportunity for the West Ham Football Club Foundation to use the facility for their Holiday Hammers Football Camps for young footballers aged 5 to 14. The Year 8 boys football team once again embarked on their annual tour to Jersey in the Channel Islands from Thursday 25th to Saturday 27th September. The boys played against two local teams, Victoria College and De La Salle. It was an amazing experience for the team to travel to another part of the UK to play football, and they all enjoyed the opportunity. Despite losing the first game to Victoria College 3-0, they fought back in the second match to win 7-3 vs De La Salle. "We woke up on the Thursday morning ready to meet at school for 6:30 AM where we said our goodbyes to our parents, excited for the trip ahead of us. On arrival at the airport, we headed through security and then we took a team photo before we went off in groups of three or more looking in shops and having breakfast. Once we landed in Jersey we went for lunch at a sea-side restaurant, where we had a delicious meal. The view of the beach with its pearl white sand, was so enticing so we went down onto it to let off some steam with a great game of beach football. Before setting off for our first game of the tour, we grabbed a quick ice cream in the beach in the sun. We battled hard in our first game against a very athletic school, where we thought we had visited Hogwarts! It was a tough match, but we came out with the mentality to win our next game. Once finished, we went back to the hotel for the first time and then went into the town for the evening. There we had dinner and time to relax. A good night’s sleep was needed for all of us! On our second day we went swimming at a local leisure centre, this was so much fun as we played loads of games and raced in the rapids! Our second match followed straight after lunch, and we were determined to start on top form from the first blow of the whistle. As a team we battled through every minute of the game, committing to every tackle, making plenty of opportunities, showing perseverance and resilience. For our final night we went out to a fabulous Italian restaurant (Bella Italia) and after finishing dinner, we took a slow stroll back to the hotel for our final night’s sleep. To conclude our trip, on the last morning we revisited the town centre for a final time to make sure we had all the gifts we wanted for our families. This was a fantastic team building trip which we all thoroughly enjoyed, with two fabulous coaches who we couldn’t have had a better time with, we are all so pleased and honoured to be a part of this wonderful team and to have had this amazing opportunity." Ich bin ein Berliner  Last week, 26 Year 9 and 10 students set off to explore Berlin in Germany. It was an action packed 4 days where they visited the sights in Berlin, practiced their German and sampled German foods. Never before did a group of students eat so many Currywurst, Döner and Brezeln.  "Our hotel was located right in the centre of all the sights and a short walk away from Berlin Alexanderplatz and the East Side Gallery which we saw on the first day. We got our bearings from the Park Inn hotel viewing platform and got an impression of the size of Berlin with the impressive TV Tower as a reference. On the second day we started our sightseeing tour. We walked past the Berliner Rathaus, the Fernsehturm, the Bebelplatz, the Museums Insel, soaked up the Berlin history in the Berliner Dom and the DDR Museum and stopped for lunch at Checkpoint Charlie.  We also paused and took a few minutes to remember the Jewish people who lost their lives during the Third Reich at the Jewish memorial.  After a very brief break and dinner in the hotel, we left again to visit the German parliament - the Bundestag. From the roof terrace we soaked up the views of Berlin at night. The Brandenburger Tor, the symbol of German unification, was brilliantly illuminated and a perfect opportunity for us to take photos.  We finished the evening with a visit to the Potsdamer Platz - once Europe's biggest building site where students enjoyed the water fountains and showed off the skills on the piano. Thursday morning, we left early to meet our guide of the Berliner Unterwelten to discover the bomb shelters created during the Second World War. It was an interesting and informative tour.  We then spent some time seeing parts of the Berlin Wall which brought us closer to some of the sad stories about how over 136 people lost their lives trying to cross the border between 1961 and 1989. The afternoon was spent at the KuDamm, Berlin's answer to Oxford street with the KaDeWe , the German Harrods, to do some last minute souvenir shopping.  Despite another exhausting day, we had enough energy left to visit the Berlin Icebar. Dressed warmly we said Prost with glasses of ice and polar bears watching.  Friday morning was a bank holiday to celebrate 35 years of German Unification and we felt it was fitting to climb to the top of the Victory Column before returning to the UK. Great Baddow Sixth Form Celebrates Record-Breaking A Level and Vocational Results. Great Baddow Sixth Form is proud to announce its best-ever set of A Level and vocational results, with a record 59% of grades at A*-B and 100% A-E*. These results are a testament to the dedication and hard work of both students and staff, and they open the door to a wide range of exciting opportunities for our young people. We are immensely proud of all our students, and several deserve special recognition for their exceptional achievements: · Melissa W achieved four A Levels at A*, A*, A*, A and will be studying Zoology at the University of Leeds. · Thomas H secured A*, A*, A and will pursue Aerospace Engineering at the University of Sheffield. · Dylan W gained a place at the prestigious and highly competitive University College London to study Economics, with results of A*, A, A. · James R achieved A*, A*, A, A and will study Chemistry at Loughborough University. · Callum S, Joaben K and Callum H all achieved A grades at A levels and will be attending their first-choice universities. Our vocational students have also excelled, with many achieving top grades. A special mention goes to Lisa L, who studied the equivalent of four A Levels, achieving Triple Distinction Stars in BTEC Extended Diploma for Sport and a B grade A Level. She will be studying Health and Exercise Science at Bath University. Our GB Medic Programme continues to support students aiming for careers in medicine and dentistry, and we are delighted that several students have secured places on these highly competitive courses. Reflecting the different further education pathways available to students, a number of our students have successfully gained places on competitive apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships such as BP and Bellway Homes. At GBHS, students have access to a dedicated careers event each year aimed at enhancing their aspirations and understanding of their paths after leaving Great Baddow High School. Each year has a different event tailored to the changing needs of our students.  This year's event took place in July, and it was fantastic to see so many students actively engaged in the variety of tasks and events that were available to them, from creating cultural costumes, filming documentaries or preparing for the future with mock interviews and setting career goals. We would like to thank everyone that was involved in the day, from the staff that organise the event, to the students that took part so enthusiastically and especially to all our guests and visitors, without whom, the event couldn't take place.  Pictures from the day are available to view in the School Gallery here. Year 7 – Celebrating Global Cultures Year 7 students immersed themselves in a vibrant celebration of cultures from around the world. They designed and created their own cultural costumes, filling the school with colour and creativity. The Music Department introduced them to the rhythms of Samba, which echoed through the corridors. Students also had the chance to learn new languages from their peers, showcasing the rich diversity within our school community. A high-energy Capoeira session got everyone moving, and the day concluded with a joyful parade around the school field, where students proudly displayed their creations. Year 8 – Understanding Disability and Inclusion Year 8 focused on deepening their awareness of disabilities and the importance of inclusion. They planned and filmed their own documentaries, exploring different perspectives and experiences. A deaf awareness session, led by our Resource Base for Deaf Students, gave students the opportunity to learn British Sign Language through games. Meanwhile, the PE Department hosted a Paralympic Games tournament, allowing students to experience a range of adaptive sports and develop a greater appreciation for athletic diversity. Year 9 – Learning About Consent and Self-Defence Year 9 students engaged in important discussions around consent, healthy relationships, and the impact of media and pornography. These sessions were designed to promote respectful behaviour and informed choices. Later in the day, students participated in a self-defence workshop led by instructors from local karate school, Kinetic Martial Arts, learning practical techniques and building confidence in a safe and supportive environment. Year 10 – Preparing for the Future Year 10 took a big step toward their futures with a full day of mock interviews. Over 30 professionals from local businesses volunteered their time to give students a realistic interview experience. The day began with a talk from the Department for Work and Pensions, followed by interview preparation sessions with tutors. After their interviews, students reflected on feedback and set goals for their future careers. The day ended with a celebration of excellence, as visitors recognised standout performances with Careers Excellence Awards. It was a proud moment for all involved.

Our Year 7 students recently took part in the exciting “What’s my job?” Careers Insight Event, and it was a huge success! The day was filled with curiosity, creativity, and plenty of “aha!” moments as students tried to uncover the mystery professions of our four special guests. Students had just 10 minutes with each guest to ask clever, thoughtful questions - without ever asking directly what their job was. The challenge? To figure it out based on the clues they uncovered. The big reveals didn’t disappoint! One guest turned out to be a stuntman and actor, who wowed students with stories from film sets and the physical demands of his job. Another was a food developer who had worked with Gordon Ramsay and now creates menus for Nando’s and Marks & Spencer—a role that sparked lots of interest (and made everyone a bit hungry!). We also welcomed an insurance broker, who explained the importance of protecting what matters, and a professional in AI solutions, who gave students a glimpse into the future of technology and innovation. After the guessing game, the visitors shared their career journeys, offered advice, and encouraged students to follow their passions - wherever they may lead. Our Year 12 Spanish A level students enjoyed a cultural Spanish inspired day out in London.  First stop was the Imperial War Museum where they looked at photography and propaganda from the Spanish Civil War.  Students investigated how different styles of propaganda were used by both sides of the conflict between 1936 and 1939. Next, after a walk past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, they briefly visited the Spanish art section of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, before heading to an exhibition, displaying the work of Mexican painter José María Velasco.  The students took an audio tour in Spanish to learn about how the artist used landscape to portray his cultural heritage and the influence of Mexico's ancient civilisations.  "To round off our day, "fuimos de tapas". Earlier this year, a group of twelve Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to attend the Layer Marney Outdoor Centre, where they participated in a series of team-building and challenging activities. These experiences were designed to push students outside their comfort zones and help them develop critical thinking skills. The event was run by Essex Boys and Girls Clubs and marked the first stage of a three-part initiative known as the Chelmsford Respect Project. Throughout the day, students engaged in activities that encouraged personal growth, resilience, and collaboration. Following this, five students were selected to progress to the second stage of the project, where they worked closely with Essex Boys and Girls Clubs on key topics such as teamwork, communication, handling conflict, and peer pressure. The journey continued for two of our students, who were invited to attend a residential week in the Lake District. During this immersive experience, they further developed their skills while working towards their ASDAN awards—a testament to their dedication and progress. We are incredibly proud of all the students who participated in each stage of the Chelmsford Respect Project. Their growth, commitment, and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to apply these valuable skills in the future. To celebrate their achievements, Mrs Whitelaw and Mr Hurlock attended the Awards Evening, where students Rubie-Lou H and another student were formally recognised for their outstanding efforts. The evening featured videos and photographs showcasing the students’ journey, and it was a powerful reminder of how far they have come. Students in our Resource Base for Deaf Students, met with with students from other resource bases across Essex this week at Hylands House. Six schools came to enjoy the day together, including Primary Resource Bases from Mildmay, Tanys Dell, Glebe & Ghyllgrove plus secondary schools Sweyne Park and ourselves.  They started the day with a Baddow well-being walk and the opportunity to explore, and see Hylands House.  The day gave our deaf students the opportunity to reunite with old staff and students plus making new friends and connections.  They also enjoyed the opportunity to mix with other year groups.  Students commented on how ‘this was an opportunity they didn’t have when younger, but they felt it would boost their confidence in socialising in a safe and friendly environment.’  We took part in a range of activities including frizbee, football and new games such as ‘traffic lights’ which relied on their sign language receptive skills, as well as on the adventure playground.  Our students were excellent role model to younger pupils and a special mention to Dexter who did a great job of taking it on himself to help the reception children to play badminton! Plus delivering a fantastic speech at the end to all. Staff also commented; ‘It was great to see the children playing together, no matter the age, interact and be kind & supportive to each other.' ‘Work wonders for the children to be able to be in a place that they feel comfortable and confident to be themselves’  Children that struggle with their deaf identity have embraced it, and didn’t feel like they stood out. For some it was the first time they had been in an environment with so many deaf students at the same time. It was truly a special day of ‘being together’ with our deaf community and Ttank you to all staff for making it happen.
