Great Baddow Sixth Form Celebrates Record-Breaking A Level and Vocational Results. Great Baddow Sixth Form is proud to announce its best-ever set of A Level and vocational results, with a record 59% of grades at A*-B and 100% A-E*. These results are a testament to the dedication and hard work of both students and staff, and they open the door to a wide range of exciting opportunities for our young people. We are immensely proud of all our students, and several deserve special recognition for their exceptional achievements: · Melissa W achieved four A Levels at A*, A*, A*, A and will be studying Zoology at the University of Leeds. · Thomas H secured A*, A*, A and will pursue Aerospace Engineering at the University of Sheffield. · Dylan W gained a place at the prestigious and highly competitive University College London to study Economics, with results of A*, A, A. · James R achieved A*, A*, A, A and will study Chemistry at Loughborough University. · Callum S, Joaben K and Callum H all achieved A grades at A levels and will be attending their first-choice universities. Our vocational students have also excelled, with many achieving top grades. A special mention goes to Lisa L, who studied the equivalent of four A Levels, achieving Triple Distinction Stars in BTEC Extended Diploma for Sport and a B grade A Level. She will be studying Health and Exercise Science at Bath University. Special mention must also go to our Head Boy and Girl for their outstanding grades: · Daniel H achieved A*, A, A, B and will study Physics with Astrophysics at York University. · Ellen S achieved A, A, A, B and will study History and Politics at the University of East Anglia. Our GB Medic Programme continues to support students aiming for careers in medicine and dentistry, and we are delighted that several students have secured places on these highly competitive courses. Reflecting the different further education pathways available to students, a number of our students have successfully gained places on competitive apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships such as BP and Bellway Homes. Notably, Zac E will begin training with Skybourne Academy as a commercial pilot, alongside a degree in air transport management this September. “I would like to congratulate all of our students and staff on an exceptional set of results. At GBHS, students have access to a dedicated careers event each year aimed at enhancing their aspirations and understanding of their paths after leaving Great Baddow High School. Each year has a different event tailored to the changing needs of our students.  This year's event took place in July, and it was fantastic to see so many students actively engaged in the variety of tasks and events that were available to them, from creating cultural costumes, filming documentaries or preparing for the future with mock interviews and setting career goals. We would like to thank everyone that was involved in the day, from the staff that organise the event, to the students that took part so enthusiastically and especially to all our guests and visitors, without whom, the event couldn't take place.  Pictures from the day are available to view in the School Gallery here. Year 7 – Celebrating Global Cultures Year 7 students immersed themselves in a vibrant celebration of cultures from around the world. They designed and created their own cultural costumes, filling the school with colour and creativity. The Music Department introduced them to the rhythms of Samba, which echoed through the corridors. Students also had the chance to learn new languages from their peers, showcasing the rich diversity within our school community. A high-energy Capoeira session got everyone moving, and the day concluded with a joyful parade around the school field, where students proudly displayed their creations. Year 8 – Understanding Disability and Inclusion Year 8 focused on deepening their awareness of disabilities and the importance of inclusion. They planned and filmed their own documentaries, exploring different perspectives and experiences. A deaf awareness session, led by our Resource Base for Deaf Students, gave students the opportunity to learn British Sign Language through games. Meanwhile, the PE Department hosted a Paralympic Games tournament, allowing students to experience a range of adaptive sports and develop a greater appreciation for athletic diversity. Year 9 – Learning About Consent and Self-Defence Year 9 students engaged in important discussions around consent, healthy relationships, and the impact of media and pornography. These sessions were designed to promote respectful behaviour and informed choices. Later in the day, students participated in a self-defence workshop led by instructors from local karate school, Kinetic Martial Arts, learning practical techniques and building confidence in a safe and supportive environment. Year 10 – Preparing for the Future Year 10 took a big step toward their futures with a full day of mock interviews. Over 30 professionals from local businesses volunteered their time to give students a realistic interview experience. The day began with a talk from the Department for Work and Pensions, followed by interview preparation sessions with tutors. After their interviews, students reflected on feedback and set goals for their future careers. The day ended with a celebration of excellence, as visitors recognised standout performances with Careers Excellence Awards. It was a proud moment for all involved.

Our Year 7 students recently took part in the exciting “What’s my job?” Careers Insight Event, and it was a huge success! The day was filled with curiosity, creativity, and plenty of “aha!” moments as students tried to uncover the mystery professions of our four special guests. Students had just 10 minutes with each guest to ask clever, thoughtful questions - without ever asking directly what their job was. The challenge? To figure it out based on the clues they uncovered. The big reveals didn’t disappoint! One guest turned out to be a stuntman and actor, who wowed students with stories from film sets and the physical demands of his job. Another was a food developer who had worked with Gordon Ramsay and now creates menus for Nando’s and Marks & Spencer—a role that sparked lots of interest (and made everyone a bit hungry!). We also welcomed an insurance broker, who explained the importance of protecting what matters, and a professional in AI solutions, who gave students a glimpse into the future of technology and innovation. After the guessing game, the visitors shared their career journeys, offered advice, and encouraged students to follow their passions - wherever they may lead. Our Year 12 Spanish A level students enjoyed a cultural Spanish inspired day out in London.  First stop was the Imperial War Museum where they looked at photography and propaganda from the Spanish Civil War.  Students investigated how different styles of propaganda were used by both sides of the conflict between 1936 and 1939. Next, after a walk past Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, they briefly visited the Spanish art section of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, before heading to an exhibition, displaying the work of Mexican painter José María Velasco.  The students took an audio tour in Spanish to learn about how the artist used landscape to portray his cultural heritage and the influence of Mexico's ancient civilisations.  "To round off our day, "fuimos de tapas". Earlier this year, a group of twelve Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to attend the Layer Marney Outdoor Centre, where they participated in a series of team-building and challenging activities. These experiences were designed to push students outside their comfort zones and help them develop critical thinking skills. The event was run by Essex Boys and Girls Clubs and marked the first stage of a three-part initiative known as the Chelmsford Respect Project. Throughout the day, students engaged in activities that encouraged personal growth, resilience, and collaboration. Following this, five students were selected to progress to the second stage of the project, where they worked closely with Essex Boys and Girls Clubs on key topics such as teamwork, communication, handling conflict, and peer pressure. The journey continued for two of our students, who were invited to attend a residential week in the Lake District. During this immersive experience, they further developed their skills while working towards their ASDAN awards—a testament to their dedication and progress. We are incredibly proud of all the students who participated in each stage of the Chelmsford Respect Project. Their growth, commitment, and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to apply these valuable skills in the future. To celebrate their achievements, Mrs Whitelaw and Mr Hurlock attended the Awards Evening, where students Rubie-Lou H and another student were formally recognised for their outstanding efforts. The evening featured videos and photographs showcasing the students’ journey, and it was a powerful reminder of how far they have come. Students in our Resource Base for Deaf Students, met with with students from other resource bases across Essex this week at Hylands House. Six schools came to enjoy the day together, including Primary Resource Bases from Mildmay, Tanys Dell, Glebe & Ghyllgrove plus secondary schools Sweyne Park and ourselves.  They started the day with a Baddow well-being walk and the opportunity to explore, and see Hylands House.  The day gave our deaf students the opportunity to reunite with old staff and students plus making new friends and connections.  They also enjoyed the opportunity to mix with other year groups.  Students commented on how ‘this was an opportunity they didn’t have when younger, but they felt it would boost their confidence in socialising in a safe and friendly environment.’  We took part in a range of activities including frizbee, football and new games such as ‘traffic lights’ which relied on their sign language receptive skills, as well as on the adventure playground.  Our students were excellent role model to younger pupils and a special mention to Dexter who did a great job of taking it on himself to help the reception children to play badminton! Plus delivering a fantastic speech at the end to all. Staff also commented; ‘It was great to see the children playing together, no matter the age, interact and be kind & supportive to each other.' ‘Work wonders for the children to be able to be in a place that they feel comfortable and confident to be themselves’  Children that struggle with their deaf identity have embraced it, and didn’t feel like they stood out. For some it was the first time they had been in an environment with so many deaf students at the same time. It was truly a special day of ‘being together’ with our deaf community and Ttank you to all staff for making it happen. 

During our annual Trips Week, Year 7 travelled back in time to Norman England of 1066. Stansted Mountfitchet Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle and village, re-constructed on its original historic ancient site. Complete with many different buildings, students enjoyed the interactive exhibits, siege weapons and animals roaming freely throughout the 10-acre site. On Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th June, Year 8 students visited Walton-on-the-Naze. The weather was certainly on our side during the two days with beautiful clear skies. This year the tides on both mornings were on our side and we were able to explore both ends of the beach. Across the two days, 227 students took part in fieldwork on the beaches at two different sites along this coastline. They were able to try out different geographical experiments, including measuring the angle of the beach, field sketches and wave counts. They had a great opportunity to see first-hand the erosion, sea defences and most importantly the impact these are having on the local area. With over 30 thrilling rides, attractions and live events, THORPE PARK is an island like no other and the perfect destination for our end of Year ten reward. Despite a small delayed start and the usual traffic, we made good time and arrived at our destination with several hours to enjoy the park to its fullest. As canny as the Y10s are, they had already downloaded the park's App and were clued up on the queueing times for the best of the thrill seeking rides. Once in the park the 10s were 'like bees in a hive" buzzing around with excitement and purpose. Staff too had come prepared with their agenda of rides and their preparations had included the purchase of a Fastrack ticket(s) for unlimited Fastrack on a ride of choice. There were plenty to choose from what with Nemesis Inferno, SAW – The Ride, Stealth, The Swarm and Colossus, but the favourite and most recent addition to the park was Hyperia. At 236 feet tall it is the UK's highest rollercoaster, hurtling along the 995 meters of track generating speeds in excess of 80 mph: thankfully this was all enjoyed before lunch!  Throughout the day students came to share their experiences with staff and it was clear that they were all really enjoying the visit. Tales of 'screamers,' 'scaredy cats,' 'brave warriors' and they occasional 'woo's' were shared along with giggles and smiles.  Despite the heat - 31 degrees! - the majority of students had hydrated and protected themselves against the relentless rays, with sun cream, hats and hand held fans. Add to this a mountain of ice-cream, a reservoir of slushies and gallons of water, the only complaint was the prices they had to pay to stay cool. All in all the day was an immense success and one that I am sure that will be part of the memories the Year 10s take with them as part of their time at GBHS. The Duke of Edinburgh Assessed Expedition 2025 was a resounding success — if your definition of success includes a bit of rain, a lot of mud, and discovering just how not waterproof some "waterproof" jackets really are. Our brilliant students rose to the challenge with smiles (and occasionally soggy socks). Many of them even admitted — quietly, and only once their phones were safely back in their hands — that they quite enjoyed spending time with each other offline. Lessons were learnt: tents are not soundproof, sleep is not optional, and snacks are social currency. As always, it was a joy to see our young people thriving outside the classroom, working together, and embracing the wild (well... as wild as the British countryside allows). We’re incredibly proud of their resilience, teamwork, and ability to function without Wi-Fi mostly.

The GBHS Bright Sparks group, who have been working hard on a university style project entitled “War reporting: Beneficial or harmful”, had a day visiting the University of Sussex near Brighton to see for themselves how a university student’s life differs from that of a secondary school student. After battling the traffic of the A12 and M25 we arrived on campus slightly later than expected, to be greeted by Lewis, the university’s School Visits Coordinator and Matilda and Asha, two students at the university who are coming to the end of their second year. Lewis gave us an interesting and insightful talk on life as a university student, we all learnt a lot, including the variety of courses available to study, the vast number of societies and clubs that you can join and not to waste your student loans on fast food!!! After that, the students split into two groups for a campus tour. They were fabulously led by Matilda and Asha, who showed them all areas of campus and answered a myriad of questions on all aspects of student life. After a lovely lunch on campus, there was time to drive down to the seafront and spend half an hour relaxing on the beach. On Saturday 10th May we had the pleasure of hosting our annual Inter-Primary Music Competition. It was lovely to welcome fifteen young musicians from a variety of local primary schools for a morning of music and fun.  There were performances on piano, cello, violin, trombone, drums and voice and each student showed great promise for the future. There were familiar tunes such as the Flintstones and the Carol of the Bells; a reggae-inspired drum piece to represent Camden Square; hits from the musicals Six and Greatest Showman; and some very mature performances of Einaudi and Mozart. Congratulations to all of the pupils that participated including to those that received extra recognition for the amount of energy, story and emotion in their performance.  Our biggest congratulations go to Linden who was the overall winner, having performed beautifully on Piano and Cello. Thank you also to our Year 11 GCSE students Isabella, Ava and Ben for judging the competition and their kind words of encouragement to all the students that took part. We are already looking forward to next year, Mr Bentley and Mr Herbert

Over the past year students have had great fun slowly growing our allotment at Allotment Club. Starting completely from scratch, the students have been involved in a wide variety of activities and have provided excellent thoughts and ideas on how to establish this area of our school to benefit even more in the future. They have planted plenty of seeds, nurtured those that germinated, set up compost bins, created banana peel fertilisers and created bamboo stakes harvested from the garden. The students have also spent time in the Design and Technology department, cutting up wood and putting together planters. They got to the chance to create and taste some yummy recipes using foraged or grown food including heading to the Food and Nutrition department to cook cherry and rhubarb crisp, salad with our own grown leaves and rose perfume from the library’s beautiful rose bushes. Students then took their tomato, chilli, pepper and basil plants home to harvest from through the summer. In the autumn term they moved into their new location on the field and began to set out their new layout, which created plenty of hard work and in spring the planting began for a great summer term of growing again. We would love plenty of new members as many of our fantastic members are heading into their exams which we wish them the best of luck with so will need some fresh hands to keep the fun rolling. Special thanks to; The students involved in getting this club started and all their support and ideas as well as the fun we have had! Miss Horley – for allowing us to use the food and nutrition department facilities to cook food from harvests. Mrs Holland and Mr Faulkner – for their amazing donations of plants, pots and equipment to help us get started. Mr Farmer – for allowing us a little slice of the field to start establishing an area for many more students to benefit from in the future. And many more staff who have offered time or equipment to get this club rolling. During the Easter holidays 35 Year 10 geography students and 4 staff had a very early 3a.m. start from school, to take a flight from Heathrow to Rome. After collecting our luggage from the airport, we met our driver who took us to the San Sebastiano Catacombs, for many this was a new experience of going underground and incredible to explore many of the underground tunnels which lie underneath the city. The dark narrow tunnels were once burial places for the many dead in the city however these have since been robbed of artefacts and bones but still remain as reminders of the past. Leaving the Catacombs, we progressed to our first hotel on the outskirts of Rome, leaving our luggage here before taking a tram back to the city. On foot, we walked to the Spanish Steps, the celebrated Trevi Fountain and then on to the beautiful Piazza Navona to grab some pizza, gelato and a few souvenirs. Then, once again climbing on a tram back to the hotel, everyone settled into their rooms before dinner. Sleep at last! Day 2 was a big one. Back on the trams for the guided tour of the Colosseum, which was totally awe inspiring, then a spot of lunch…pizza for most! The coach took us next to Sorrento where there was new accommodation, which overlooked the Mediterranean and had access to a beach and football pitch. The cabin type accommodation here was thoroughly enjoyed. On day 3 we were up for an early breakfast, before heading up onto the slopes of the dormant Vesuvius for a guided walk in the Valley of Hell and a chance to see some inspiring views overlooking Naples and Pompeii where 8 million people live in the shadow of the volcano. A short drive took us to the ancient city of Pompeii, where 7 metres of ash froze the city in time. It was difficult to not be totally taken by the sights of the houses, mosaics roads and amphitheatre. Day 4 had a little more leisurely start, with a late breakfast, time to tidy up and then enjoy the beautiful surroundings before getting back on the coach, for our tour around a local organic farm with animals, oranges, lemons olives. Students had a go at making pizzas, followed by eating them! We were then taken by coach into Sorrento for last minute souvenirs for a very memorable trip. Last gelatos before Naples airport and back to school at midnight. An action packed 4 full days!!

40 Year 8 & 9 students were accompanied by Mr Davis, Mr Van Os, Mr Wells, Mrs Mills and Mrs Hendry for a week-long ski trip to Austria. Students were well organised and the trip set off in good time to catch the ferry from Dover to Calais on Friday 4th April. The ferry crossing was like a mill pond and it felt like we were the only group onboard as we were treated to fish and chips in the main restaurant. After some food, students headed straight for the arcade where they spent the remainder of the crossing. Several hours and a few toilet stops later, we arrived in our resort at around 11am Saturday morning. The hotel was ready and waiting for us, students were settled into their rooms and then the group commenced ski fit. Once everyone was kitted out we spent the remainder of the day exploring the hotels sports facilities, grabbing some lunch and relaxing in the sunshine. Soon enough the temptation for staff to get involved in the football match was too much. It was an epic battle on the 5-a-side pitch, and it looked as if the students would get the better of the staff. Unfortunately for the students, the fairytale ending never came and a miraculous comeback saw the staff score their final goal claiming a 5-4 win before the dinner bell rang. Attempts by students to schedule a rematch were unsuccessful and staff basked in their success for the next few days. More seriously, that evening, students got their ski clothing ready and had an early night ready to hit the pistes the next morning. Weather conditions were kind to us and we had great conditions for skiing. The beginners hit the practice slopes, whilst the more experienced skiers explored the mountain. After a long and active day skiing everyone was tired. A short rest back at the hotel, some food and we were ready to go swimming. Students loved the various flumes, diving boards, climbing wall and the wave pool at the swimming centre. A particular favourite was the vertical drop slide where the floor drops out and you shoot straight down into the darkness.  The following day, the beginner slopes were much busier with more school groups having arrived. The beginners really pushed hard in the morning, meaning that by the afternoon they were able to take the chair lift to the top. Whilst the skiing further up was more demanding, they handled it well and it was amazing to see them get that thrill of gliding down groomed pistes. The more experienced groups were busy exploring the wider local area that was interlinked by 2 panoramic gondolas. The intermediate group were perfecting their parallel turns and starting to carve tracks on red slopes. For the next few days, the 2 more experienced groups both went on ski tours across the mountain range to the surrounding resorts or Flachau-winkel, Zauchansee, Kleinarl and Wagrain. They often skied from the top lift to the bottom in one complete run without stopping. The students loved this, as it allowed for some really progressive skiing, however I'm not sure the staff members' legs and knees enjoyed it too much. On Tuesday we celebrated the birthdays of both TJ and Mr Wells. As a salute to the special day, we formed a guard of honour at the bottom of the slopes and sang happy birthday to them as they skied through the gap. The snowballs thrown at them at the same time were well received by both, TJ expertly avoiding most and Mr Wells falling at the worst opportunity, so more snow was piled over him. The evening entertainment was excellent. We flew down an alpine rollercoaster, played Austrian skittles (well done to the 6'rs for winning), and watched a very entertaining ice hockey match in Zell am Zee - I am still not entirely sure how the group managed to come away from the game with several ice hockey sticks and pucks given to them by the players. On the last day we hit the slopes in perfect conditions - it was colder and the pistes remained in great condition all day. After wishing our instructors a fond farewell we returned our equipment and prepared for the journey home. After another smooth channel crossing we were greeted back at the school by parents excited to hear all about their child's adventure. We hope that all students enjoyed the experience, and I would like to personally thank each student for being a tremendous ambassador for the school (I received several comments from strangers about their superb behaviour).   In addition, the trip does not happen without a fantastic team of staff willing to give up their own time off to supervise the trip. Great Baddow High School is the most popular non-selective school in Chelmsford. Figures published in the press this week confirmed that GBHS had the highest number of first choice selections of all non-selective schools in the city. Overall, we are the top secondary school in Chelmsford for first and second choice options. "As Headteacher of the school, I know the outstanding educational experience we deliver to our students' and it is fantastic that the parents in our area recognise this and make our community the one they want to be a part of. However, in true GBHS style, we will not be resting on our laurels but will continue to strive for higher things in our pursuit of excellence." Mr Farmer, Headteacher Just over 97 per cent of children - more than 19 out of every 20 - are being offered one of their named preferences of secondary schools for the 2025 academic year in the county. A total of 83.86 per cent are being offered their parents’ first preference this year, with a further 8.72 per cent being offered their second preference. This means 92.58 per cent have been offered either their parents’ first or second preference. At Great Baddow High School, we were the 4th hardest school to get into in the County, with 301 parents putting GBHS down as their first choice, 215 of which were successful. We are delighted that parents are choosing our school and that we have the highest number of parents putting us down as either their first or second choice in Chelmsford. Our Active Travel Ambassadors are concerned about the behaviour of some road users in Duffield Road both before and after school. They invited Essex Police to come in and see for themselves the issues faced by students when travelling to school. Essex Police have kindly taken this up and officers were outside of the school at the start and end of the day on Monday 10th March and Friday 14th March with our ATAs and plan to assist us again in the coming weeks. PCs Smith and Armstrong visited the school on Monday 10th and today, spending almost an hour before school and half an hour after school assessing the situation in Duffield Road and surrounding areas. They commented on the dedication and commitment of the ATAs and how impressed they were with their determination to improve the situation. They brought with them a speed camera. Thankfully no-one was speeding, although both the students and police thought that 30 mph is too fast outside a school. They noticed how polite and respectful the whole school student community are, engaging with the police officers in a positive, friendly way. The driving habits of some parents were noted as dangerous, stopping on the zig-zag lines at the zebra crossing to drop off/pick up their children and then remaining on the zig-zag lines while they cross at the zebra crossing (stopping on the zig-zag lines outside a school can be a £50 fine and points on your licence). Some drivers did not pay any attention to students crossing the road. Some parents used the school driveway as a turning circle despite it being blatantly dangerous and signs requesting not to. After school the parking was madness. Parents parked in bus stops and on corners, making the situation much more dangerous for other road users. Some students were cycling to school without helmets, which, whilst not against the law is not advised. Most students cycling to school were doing so in a safe, sensible manner, but there were a few who cycled out of school and didn't look down the road before pulling out. Some students were also cycling on the pavement, which shouldn't happen, but the police appreciate that on a busy road like Duffield Road in the morning, this is the sensible thing to do - but students must be mindful of pedestrians and slow down or dismount when on the pavement. We were also reminded that when it is dark it is a legal requirement for bikes to have front and rear lights on. We would like to continue working with Essex Police to ensure Duffield Road and the surrounding areas are safer places to travel. Essex police have kindly said they would support us with this. It is their approach to make the roads safer by asking road users to comply with safer driving. It is a last resort to issue penalty fines. Please keep our roads safer for our children (and keep your money in your bank accounts) by driving responsibly around the school. Look out for future initiatives from the ATAs to make travelling to and from school healthier and safer.    

Thursday 6th March was World Book Day.  Every year we take part in this celebration which promotes a love of books and reading for pleasure.  This year we had a number of activities taking place in the library and around school.  Our daily activities in the library included Matching Pairs, Pupil Librarian Activities, Guess Who’s Coming For Dinner, Lucky Dip Books and Guess The Lego Books.  Students were awarded credits for taking part in all of our activities.  We also had a week long ‘World Book Day Book Scavenger Hunt’ competition where students went around school looking for the special World Book Day posters and trying to solve the clues.    Our biggest competition this year was our World Book Day Creative Writing Competition. Students were given six different pictures and then challenged to write a short story or poem, based on one of the pictures.  We had some absolutely amazing entries and it was very tough choosing winners and so a huge well done to all those who took part.      1st Place KS3: Noah H 7H2    1st Place KS4: Isabelle R 11A1    Joint 2nd Place: Krystelle M 7A1 and Ava M 7A3    3rd Place: Sophie B 8A3.  

We are thrilled to announce that our recent careers fair was a resounding success, marking our biggest event yet with over 50 exhibitors in attendance. This year's fair was designed to provide students with a comprehensive look at the diverse career paths available to them, and it certainly delivered. The fair was organized into five distinct zones, each representing a different sector of the job market. These zones included everything from the Army to games design, ensuring that there was something for everyone. Students had the unique opportunity to engage with professionals from a wide range of fields, ask questions, and gain valuable insights into their future career options. One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity on spirts and finance and trading talks. These talks allowed students and parents  to get firsthand accounts of these areas and a real feel for what each career entails. Feedback from both students and exhibitors has been overwhelmingly positive. Many students expressed their excitement about the new paths they discovered and the clarity they gained about their future aspirations. Exhibitors were equally enthusiastic, praising the students' curiosity and eagerness to learn. Overall, the careers fair was a fantastic opportunity for students to explore their future options and all the wonderful paths that are open to them. We look forward to making next year's event even bigger and better!

After 4 months and an estimated 60 hours of group rehearsal, the curtain has come down on our production of Shrek the Musical. We would like to say a massive congratulations to the 63 students that made-up our cast and crew for the show this year. Over the five performances, the students entertained a combined audience of 1,092 with many rave reviews already coming in.  From primary pupils who"loved watching Lord Farquaad waddle in"  to comments about the level of professionalism that our students have shown, we have been blown away by the collective opinion on the production. We have loved hearing the audience laughter at the many funny moments in the show (flying cows, growing noses, nods to Defying Gravity and Star Wars) and enjoyed hearing the audible gasps of 'wow' at the end of dances, songs and terrifying Ogre roars. Shrek the Musical had many fun elements to it and some great challenges too that have pushed us forward in our ability to put on such shows. This is the first show we have used prosthetics (Shrek and the Elves), puppets (Gingy, an exploding bird and the Dragon), made a mechanical growing nose (Pinocchio), used swamp haze, choreographed a 5-minute tap-dance routine, and featured a 45-second quick-change turning Princess Fiona green just out of sight of the audience!   We would like to say a massive thank you to every one that has supported the production and helped make it possible. We are excited to announce that Great Baddow High School will be hosting our annual Careers Fair on Thursday 27th February for Years 9 - 13. To avoid large queues please try and attend in the time slot allocated to year groups: Year 10 - 13– 6:00pm – 7:30pm Year 9 – 7:00pm – 8:30pm The Careers Fair aims to provide our students with valuable insights into various career paths and inspire them to explore their future possibilities. Year 9 students should all attend the fair to help them gather vital information to support their GCSE options. Year 10 and 11 students should attend the fair to help them gather vital information to support their choices after GCSE. Including A Level choices and apprenticeships. Year 12 and 13 students should attend the fair to help them gather vital information to explore careers, university and apprenticeship options.

The Sixth Form Common Room buzzed with excitement this week as Key Stage 3 students (Years 7 to 9) showcased their impressive history projects at the 'Show and Tell' event. The room was transformed into a vibrant historical tapestry, featuring a variety of projects and presentations. Highlights included a working trebuchet, detailed recreations of trenches and battle grounds, board games on topics such as the Romans, Tudors, The Black Death and Greek Mythology, models, PowerPoint presentations, family history displays, and the exploration of lesser-known histories. The passion and enthusiasm of the students was evident in every project, captivating the attending teachers and sparking lively discussions. The event was a testament to the students' exceptional attitude towards learning, with everyone showing great respect for each other's presentations. A variety of teachers enjoyed engaging with the projects, offering praise and encouragement. This 'Show and Tell' event not only highlighted the students' hard work and creativity but also fostered a deeper appreciation for history with all attendees. A huge ‘well done’ to everyone who participated. With such a successful display, anticipation is already building for the next event in the summer!

Last year, Great Baddow High School teamed up with the nationwide sustainable travel organisation Team Modeshift to promote active travel to and from school. The aim was to positively change people’s habits in how they travel to school, making travel healthier and more environmentally friendly. Working alongside Keith from Modeshift, our Active Travel Ambassadors completed a presentation to members of Essex County Council at County Hall and were awarded a grant to spend on their travel initiatives, which included the “Golden Bike Lock” and “Park and Stride” schemes. This week we were delighted to welcome Keith from Modeshift back into our school to speak with our students on what happens next and to present our 'Approved Certificate' for the Modeshift STARS Scheme to Mr Farmer. More changes and initiatives will be rolled out this year as the Ambassadors continue to push for a more sustainable and safer way for our students to travel to school.

The Christmas Concert took place once again in the beautiful setting of Chelmsford Cathedral. The concert at the Cathedral is one of the highlights of our year and included performances from our four choir clubs, soloists from across the GCSE music cohort, and of course the combined voices of our Year 7 students in their first secondary school performance.  We had two themed sections focusing on ‘Christmas Love’ and then ‘The Winters Night’ as well as music and carols to bring out the festive mood for the big day. We would like to say a big thank you to all the students that took part and a special thank you to the soloists and the readers who were amazing as always. This calendar year the drama and music departments have been incredibly busy with many highlights. These included the school production of High School Musical, the success of Choir 16 at the Stratford and East London Music Festival Competition, the continuation of the ‘Evening of’ concert series, a growing number of entries into our own music competition, trips to The Blue Man Group and Kerry Ellis: Queen of the West End, and fantastic GCSE results. Our weekly highlights are the personal music achievements of the students that we get the pleasure of sharing in the classroom, at clubs, the graded exam results, and when students ask us if they can give impromptu performances of pieces they have been studying in their personal time. There is a fantastic energy in the department and the carol concert is a chance for parents to see and hear some of the hard work our students are putting into their music-making. Twenty-four Year 11 Spanish students have just returned from an amazing 4 day trip to Cádiz, in the south of Spain.  The trip was organised as an immersive experience, where students had structured Spanish speaking classes in the morning, and then enjoyed cultural activities and trips for the rest of the day. They learnt how to prepare and cook an authentic paella, which was delicious and had flamenco lessons, which everyone enjoyed as well. They went out for authentic tapas and visited the city of Cádiz, where they explored the historic city and visited a cámara oscura; a hidden camera room that allowed them to see real time, what was going on in the streets below. On the last day, they went into the city of Seville and visited the Plaza de España, before heading to the Palacio Real Alcázar and its beautiful Moorish palace and gardens. If you have a child in Year 10 who is interested in science and engineering, you may be interested in a new Saturday Engineering Club being organised by the Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society and Anglia Ruskin University. The CSES and ARU Saturday Engineering Club provides an opportunity for Year 10 students to experience a range of different Science and Engineering topics using the state-of-the-art Super Lab and workshop facilities at the ARU Chelmsford Campus. Each session will explore the science and engineering behind real life activities and problems that can affect our daily lives. In addition to laboratory and workshop sessions there will also be visits to science and technology related organisations.  The Saturday Club, starting on the 25th January 2025, will run for 15 weeks from 10.00 am – 12.30 pm on Saturday mornings during term time at Anglia Ruskin’s Chelmsford Campus and is is free to attend. Year 12 and 13 physicists attended a great presentation from a former Baddow student, Archie.  Archie now works in an NHS radiotherapy physics department as a Trainee Clinical Scientist in the second year of the Scientist Training Program (STP). Students gained a valuable insight into different career pathways and the opportunities for scientists within the NHS. They learnt how a linear accelerator (LINAC) works and how it is used to deliver radiotherapy treatments to cancer patients. Many components were available to handle including a thyratron, multi-leaf collimator leaves and motors, tungsten targets, beam flatteners, beam bending assembly, radiation exposure monitoring badge and an ionisation detector. Our thanks are extended to Archie for delivering such a detailed and fascinating talk and for bringing along so many interesting pieces of equipment.

Ich bin ein Berliner  This week 17 Year 10 students set off to explore Berlin in Germany. It was an action packed 4 days where they visited the sights in Berlin, practiced their German and sampled German foods.  "Our youth hostel was located in Berlin Mitte and a short walk away from Berlin Alexanderplatz and the East Side Gallery which we saw on the first day. We got our bearings from the Park Inn hotel viewing platform and got an impression of the size of Berlin with the impressive TV tower as a reference. On the second day we started our sightseeing tour. We walked past the Berliner Rathaus, the Fernsehturm, the Bebelplatz, the Museums Insel, soaked up the Berlin history in the Berliner Dom and the DDR Museum and stopped for lunch at Checkpoint Charlie. In the Checkpoint Charlie museum we saw first hand the lengths people went to to escape from East Germany. We also paused and took a few minutes to remember the Jewish people who lost their lives during the Nazi time at the Jewish memorial.  After a very brief break and dinner in the youth hostel, we left again to visit the German parliament - the Reichstag - and climb to the top of the glass dome and soak in the views over Berlin at night. The Brandenburger Tor, the symbol of German unification, was brilliantly illuminated and a perfect opportunity for us to take photos.  Thursday morning, we left early to meet our guide Chrissie to discover the bomb shelters created during the Second World War. It was an interesting and informative tour.  We then spent some time seeing parts of the Berlin Wall which brought us closer to some of the sad stories about how over 136 people lost their life trying to cross the border between 1961 and 1989. The afternoon was spent at the KuDamm, Berlin's answer to Oxford street with the KaDeWe , the German Harrods, to do some last minute souvenir shopping.  Despite another exhausting day, we had enough energy left to see the Potsdamer Platz with it's interesting light and art displays and enjoy a group drink in a German Kneipe.  Thursday morning was a bank holiday to celebrate the unification of Germany and we felt it was fitting to climb to the top of the Victory Column before returning to the UK. It has been wonderful seeing our new Year 7s in the library over the last few weeks. They have been introduced to how the library works and the importance of reading. In these introductory library lessons, they have discussed how reading for pleasure can become a powerful tool in supporting their academic success, emotional well-being and personal growth. They have also discussed strategies for selecting the ‘right’ books.  This is important because poor choices can lead to boredom and to reading becoming a chore rather than a pleasure.  A book should be appealing and offer the right level of challenge – and be age appropriate, of course.  In groups, students took part in an activity where they had to evaluate a selection of books and choose which one had the best cover, the best blurb and the best opening sentence, and then nominate their favourite book overall.  This taught them that the more closely they look at a book, the more likely it is they will choose one that they will enjoy reading. Why Reading for Pleasure is Important and How Parents Can Help With the distractions of technology, social media and the demands of schoolwork, many teenagers may drift away from the habit of reading for enjoyment. Therefore, parental encouragement is vital in helping them maintain or rediscover the joy of reading. Here’s why it matters and how parents can support them: 1. Reading enhances academic achievement: Reading for pleasure has a direct impact on academic success, particularly in secondary school. It helps to expand vocabulary, improve comprehension skills and deepen critical thinking - all of which are crucial for subjects such as English, history and even science. 2. Reading reduces stress and improves mental health: The teenage years can be stressful, with increased pressures from school, exams and social life. Reading provides a much-needed escape, helping teenagers to relax, unwind and take a break from the demands of daily life. 3. Reading encourages empathy and understanding: reading diverse stories allows teenagers to step into the shoes of different characters, which fosters empathy and a greater understanding of other cultures, perspectives and experiences. This is particularly important as they navigate complex social dynamics during their adolescent years. 4. Reading develops lifelong skills: Reading helps develop analytical thinking, concentration and communication skills. These skills are not only beneficial for school but are essential for success in higher education, future careers and everyday life. Top Tips Allow them to choose: teenagers are more likely to read if they have the freedom to select books that interest them. Whether it’s fantasy, science fiction, biographies, or graphic novels, let them explore genres they genuinely enjoy. Discuss what they’re reading: listen to them read and show interest in their reading choices by asking about the plot, characters or themes. Engaging in conversations about books can make reading a shared experience and demonstrate that you value their opinions. Introduce a variety of reading materials: encourage them to visit the library (our books are FREE to borrow) and ask the librarians to help them find a book.  Encourage them to explore different types of texts, such as magazines, newspapers, online articles or short stories. This variety can help maintain their interest and introduce them to different styles of writing. Limit screen time: while technology is a big part of teenage life, try to set aside specific times when screens are turned off and reading is encouraged. This could be before bedtime or during quiet weekends. Be a reading role model: let your teenager see you reading regularly. When they observe that you find reading enjoyable and important, they’re more likely to follow suit. By encouraging your child to read for pleasure, you’re helping them develop skills that go beyond the classroom. You’re nurturing a habit that promotes empathy, relaxation, and intellectual growth - qualities that will support them well into adulthood.

The year 8 boys football team once again embarked on our annual tour to Jersey in the Channel Islands from Thursday 26th - Saturday 28th September. The boys played two fixtures against Victoria College on the Thursday drawing 2-2, and De La Salle on the Friday drawing 3-3. It was an amazing experience for the boys to travel to another part of the UK. "On Thursday 26th September 2024 the Year 8 football team set off on a once in a life time opportunity to Jersey. Our day started off by heading to Great Baddow High School for four thirty in the morning. Although we looked as if our had little sleep, I assure you we were ready to attack this trip throughout with the excitement building. We were all incredibly tired but seeing all our teammates made us feel wide awake. When we got to school, we were warmly greeted by Mr Russell and Mr Brittle. Within minutes of entering the school gates, and after saying our last goodbyes to our parents, we off on our three-day adventure to Jersey. We arrived at Gatwick North terminal just as the heavens opened. After a few hours of security and shopping we were ready to board the plane. The journey was short and within a blink of an eye, we were thousands of feet into the air and miles away from home, however just a few minutes away from our destination. We stepped foot on jersey soil with all the powerful, refreshing wind in our faces. Our first stop was a large windy beach surrounded by crystal clear water called Ouen’s Bay. Although the beach was amazing, it was just a bit too windy so we headed to a less windy spot at St Brelade’s Bay, although as equally beautiful. Here we played football for hours before having a well-deserved lunch. After a delicious and filling pre game meal we headed to a sports centre which had an immaculately preserved football pitch. We played a physical yet fun game of football burning off our annoying, restless energy. This set us up for our first tour football match with Mr Russell’s old school, Victoria College.  The game kicked off with ultimate intensity. Luckily, we were switched on from the start as a strong, quick and flexible winger was on OJ’s side but as ever he completely dominated the player and with an amazing challenge making him levitate for a quick moment. Disaster struck when their powerful striker calmly collected the ball and slotted it into the back of the net making it 1:0 to our opponents. Although we were frustrated, we expertly collected our emotions and went again putting us on a deadly counter attack.  Within seconds the other team recovered and were holding us back but Harry T shot an absolute bullet, making the score 1:1. After some brilliant tik-tak from the back between us all we were on another counter attack where it was Teddy A verses their keeper.  Although it was a brilliant shot it was an even better save from their goalkeeper keeping them in the game. Seconds before half-time an unfortunate goal was scored by Victoria College making the score 2:1 to them. After an inspiring and powerful team talk led by Mr Russell, we went back out into the second half confident as ever. As the time was ticking down for a 2:1 victory to them Arthur M architected an amazing goal almost from the half way line, chipping the keeper to level the score 2:2. At that point we were screaming with joy as Arthur had saved us. We were all delighted we came away with that result. Because of Harry T's amazing goal and work rate he was rightly named man of the match. After an adrenaline packed day, we were absolutely starving, but excited as we knew we were going to McDonalds for dinner. With our first day over, we were incredibly tired and happy and couldn’t wait to see what Friday had in store for us. On day 2, we met at for breakfast where we hoovered up a full English with some toast and other sides. We were all well fuelled for our day. We had some time to kill on the Friday morning, so we wondered through the high street and bought some souvenirs. After shopping we met up and headed to get lunch from an Italian food stall. This consisted of pasta and pizza and was the perfect food prep for our next match Vs De La Salle at FB Fields in the afternoon. It was delicious. A few hours later we were on our way to our second game.  The second game against De La Salle started with us cornering them in so they had nowhere to escape. Within a few minutes we were already in with a dangerous chance. The ball looked like it was going in but just missed the goal causing bickering amongst their team. After a few minutes I scored from outside the box making the score 1:0 Great Baddow. A few moments after their kick off we put amazing press on our opponents.  The ball landed directly in OJ’s (8A1) path allowing him to do a fantastic through ball to Teddy who was just denied an almost certain goal by the sheer pace of their defenders. After that amazing chance the other team took possession of the ball but luckily super OJ (8E1) swooped in dispossessing the other team of the ball and perfectly timed a pin point ball to Teddy who was wide open on the wing. This made it a definite 2:0 to Great Baddow. Towards the second half of the game the other team capitalised with two more goals directly after each other. With only a few minutes left of the game Oliver (8A1) scored a lovely goal produced by a perfect corner from Harry. We were all tired at this point but this goal made us feel more alive. With a few more attacks from us the other team capitalised on an amazing cross to their strong striker before calmly slotting it in the back of the net. We were all devastated we didn’t get the win but still happy with the outcome and how we played. Man of the match was without a doubt OJ (8E1). After the game we headed to the waterpark, which had a lazy river that we were trying to walk up against which was very hard with tired legs. After a jam-packed two days the trip was nearly over with a trip to Bella Italia as our last event. The meal was gorgeous.  After our meal, up came the thing we were most excited for, 'The Awards'. OJ (8E1) took 'Home Player of the Tournament' and Freddy took home 'Best Tourist', for his incredibly funny humour and for making everyone laugh at least one hundred times a day. Sadly, Saturday had come around quickly. After a large breakfast, we were ready to set off back to Great Baddow High School but before we could leave we needed to do a room check. Surprisingly all the rooms were spotless (I think we did a good job). The journey home was quick and smooth and within what felt like seconds, we were back in England.  During the bus journey back to school we were tuned into watch Cole Palmer as he scored four goals in the space of 40 minutes (that was very impressive). This tour was amazing, and I’m sure we all missed our parents a lot but would definitely do this trip again if we could. It was such an amazing trip." Student Report: Josh H (8E3)

The Jack Petchey Achievement Award Scheme is a flagship programme which recognises outstanding young people aged 11-25 across London and Essex. As part of the scheme, Great Baddow High School have an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young people from our school in a variety of ways. Each year we recognise nine students throughout the year who have gone above and beyond expectations in the school to help break barriers and overcome specific challenges they may face through their school journey. If selected, students will have the opportunity to choose a project or department in the school they would like to invest some money in to help move them forward. Great Baddow High School students achieved another excellent set of GCSE grades this year. Grade boundaries continue to move back to pre-pandemic levels and outcomes at Great Baddow High School reflected the hard work of students and staff. We are extremely proud of all our students, but a particular mention must be given to the following students for their outstanding achievements:  Chiara L - Ten grade 9’s (a truly outstanding achievement). Mae H – Six grade 9’s and three grade 8’s. Harry F - Six grade 9's, two grade 8’s and one grade 7. Seb W - Four grade 9’s, two grade 8’s and three grade 7’s. We would like to congratulate all our students on their examination results, and we wish them every success for the future as they embark on their chosen pathways. Year 13 students from Great Baddow High School were delighted with their results this morning and we would like to congratulate all of our students on their fantastic achievements. In line with the National average, we have again seen an increase in the number A*- A grades awarded this year. Their qualifications will open up pathways for further success and we are delighted for the students that have gained their destinations of choice as they embark on new adventures. Many of our students will now be studying degree courses at some of the most prestigious universities in the country, with a number of students selecting apprenticeships or prominent roles in employment. We are also proud of an increasing number of students who have gained highly sought after degree apprenticeships with esteemed employers. A Level and vocational results were extremely pleasing, but notable mention must be given to Matthew J (2 A* and 2 A grades), Lois B (1A* and 3 A grades), Marnie H (1A* and 3 A grades) and Beth C who achieved (D*D*D*) in her Level 3 BTEC Sports Extended Diploma. Matthew has secured his place at Southampton University to study Mechanical Engineering, Lois has secured a place to study Politics and International Relations at Bath University, Marnie will be studying a Diploma in Art at Colchester Institute and Beth will be going on to a teaching degree at Anglia University.
