Celebrating Human Rights Day at GBHS

10th Dec 2021

This year the 2021 Theme for Human Rights Day was:

EQUALITY - Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10th December — the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Available in more than five hundred languages, it is the most translated document in the world.

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home -- so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. [...] Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

At Great Baddow High School, the Religion, Philosophy and Ethics department wanted to celebrate some of the fantastic work that our Year 9 students have completed this term to support Human Rights Day 2021 by producing human rights posters.

This was part of a module on ‘What makes us human?’

The students were asked to choose three rights that they thought were particularly important to them and then explain their reasons why they thought those rights were important in the form of a poster to promote the value of human rights.

We have included a selection of the outstanding posters that were produced. We hope that you will enjoy and appreciate being able to see their posters.
