Introduction to the Sixth Form CollegeWith over 200 students, Great Baddow Sixth Form College is an energetic, friendly and successful part of the whole school. The Sixth Form College has three simple aims:-
To achieve this it is of paramount importance that students attend tutor time and lessons punctually and regularly. As a school, electronic registration now allows us to monitor these key indicators on a lesson by lesson basis. We also urge students to inform us of any known reasons for absence and that parents/guardians should telephone the school on the day if their son/daughter is ill. This will ensure the accurate recording of attendance and punctuality. In terms of academic study, students will be asked to choose 4 full A/S levels or 3 full A/S levels plus General Studies. As a result of following this curriculum plan either 20 or 17 lessons will be delivered in the classroom respectively. So that students can make best use of their time management they have to attend ‘supervised study sessions’ in non contact periods so that each students studies for 22 periods a week. In terms of getting involved within ‘sixth form life’ we ask each student to participate in one hour of our ‘Giving Something Back’ scheme a week. This could relate to any activity either within or outside the school ranging from listening to younger students read in tutor time or doing some voluntary work with older people. The choice of giving something back to the community is entirely theirs! We look forward to working in partnership with students over a two year period to achieve their full potential both academically and socially, equipping them with the necessary skills and attributes for later life. Monitoring, assessing and recording progress
All students work with tutors who help to monitor their progress with them. At regular intervals, students complete reviews of their work and these are then discussed during one-to-one meetings with their tutors. For the parents of our Year 12 and Year 13 students, there are regular meetings with tutors and teachers and detailed written reports of students' progress are sent home. Because tutors know their students well, they are able to help them to prepare applications for further and higher education colleges and for employment. They can also write detailed and supportive references that help to ensure that their students are called for interviews.
Queries in respect of curriculum mattersThe school attaches importance to consultation with parents and takes pride in its readiness to respond to any complaint lodged by a parent. The headmaster should be contacted in the first instance. |
